Birding Software Review Updates

Jeff from Jones Technologies, the developer of Birder’s Diary, has kindly taken the time to respond to my review of his product. Unfortunately I need to gain another trial extension from him in order to verify all his responses, so expect to see that response in the next day or two.

Jerry Blinn from Perceptive Systems has agreed to send me a copy of AviSys to evaluate, so expect to see a review of this software in the next couple of months. Other programs in the queue are Wildlife Lister/Recorder and BirdBase/BirdArea from Santa Barbara. Let me know if any of you would like me to take a look at any other programs. Writing a review is incredibly time consuming, so please bare with me. I do like to bird too you know!

Just got Bird Journal 1.4 – First Impressions

Bird Journal screenshot

I just got a copy of this birding software from Bluebird Technology and so far I am pretty impressed with it. I gave Birder’s Diary a go as well, but to be blunt, it was an archaic looking application that wasn’t very user friendly or intuitive. Bird Journal is by far the most modern looking and easy to use application I have tried. I have heard many good things about BirdInfo by Simon Bennett of Canberra, but despite trying to contact him directly and through the local Canberra Ornithological Club, I have had no response. AviSys does not offer a trial version, so for an application priced at over $120USD, that pretty much rules it out short of the world’s most in-depth independent review! Bird Journal uses the current Australian 2008 Christidis, L. and W.E. Boles taxonomy (with many other taxonomies offered) and the developer says that adding taxonomies of other Australian Wildlife will be incorporated in future version.

I will be sure to write up all my impressions of this software after I finish the task of copying my sightings from notebooks to the software. I am starting to see the value of keeping well organised birding records. I have resisted being a “lister” long enough. From this day forward I vow to keep better records.
